Hugh "Pete" McMullen * - Builder (Baseball/Ice Hockey) - Class of 2024
Hugh “Pete” McMullen was instrumental in founding minor baseball and hockey in Milton. As the president of Milton Baseball Club, president of the Halton County Baseball Association (1949-1963), and president of the Ontario Baseball Association from 1957-1959, Pete was a major part of the fabric of the community.
Pete was also highly regarded in hockey circles, managing Milton’s intermediate team in 1950, and serving as team president in 1955-1956.
Born on September 5th, 1911, in Esquesing Township, Pete was educated in Milton. Later, he moved to Northern Ontario where he worked in the mine industry and wrestled, earning the nickname “Hardrock McMullen”. Eventually he moved back to Milton where he worked for Regal Transport. Pete was always considered a sportsman, however, his life revolved mostly around baseball. Pete once remarked, “I have worked hard for baseball, but I am sure I received more enjoyment out of the game than most people can ever dream of.”
Armed with a lawn chair, one could always find Pete consuming any baseball game he could, irrespective of its level. Whether it be intermediate, senior or just watching young kids batting the ball around, Pete wholeheartedly lived, breathed, and loved baseball.
Pete was also involved in numerous organizations, such as: the Milton Curling Club, the Milton Kinsmen Club, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Milton Lions Club, and the Milton Rotary Club.
At the time of his death, he was the president of the Milton Merchant Junior Hockey Club.
